Tony Campolo on Romans 1;2327….

26 October 2016

Sam Hailes of sits down with “Red Letter Christian” Tony Campolo to find out the reasons for his change of heart on gay marriage…..

What Paul is doing here is tying this homosexual behaviour that he’s talking about with idolatry. If you read that passage carefully, it says they gave up their natural affections. The homosexuals say, “You don’t get it, Campolo, my natural affection was never heterosexual. My natural affection was homosexual.”

“So as I began to review scripture, I began to say, “Wait a minute, maybe this isn’t as strong a condemnation as I think it is. Maybe he’s condemning obscenities that were related to idolatry rather than loving relationships between two persons.”

“I know all the arguments pro and con. I’ve thought of everything, and I’m still open to considering new things when somebody has something new to say. Having said all of that, I just meet too many wonderful Christian people who are in gay relationships, and I know this: my own marriage has been an incredible relationship. If I was to ask what has been the greatest influence in nurturing me as a Christian, I would have to say it’s my wife. I then ask myself a very simple question: can I deny homosexual couples what I am personally experiencing in the way of blessings and joy in a relationship?”

That became the basis for my final decision.

I just knew too many couples who were living out the Christian life, who were committed to the work of the kingdom and who were in edifying relationships”.

Blog Editor:

According to a website gaychristian101 the bible is wrong talking specifically the sin of homosexuality.

It states notice sodomite spelled with a @ to dull the rebuke of the scripture

“Sodomites, qadesh and qadesha, in the Bible were male and female worshipers of the Canaanite fertility goddess, not homosexuals and not lesbians according to this site.

Sodom was an ancient Canaanite city, Genesis 10:15-19, 13:12. The pagan Canaanite religious worship of the people of Sodom included precisely the same cultic, religious, sexual activity which was forbidden by God in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 and Deuteronomy 23:17-18.”

The important link between the inhabitants of Sodom and ancient “sod@mites” is cultic sexual worship of the Canaanite fertility goddess, not committed, non-cultic same sex relationships.

Again the following taken from this same website;

55 times our English Bibles use the word Sodom and related English words, sod@mite, sod@mites, Sodoma. Yet strangely enough, in Hebrew, Sodom and sod@mite are not related words. For this reason, it is easy to draw the wrong conclusion, that Sodom and sod@mites are related when in fact, they are not etymologically related.

  1. Never in any of the Sodom passages does God say that the sin of Sodom was homosexuality.
  2. Never in any of the Sodom passages does God or a human author of the Bible link homosexuality with Sodom.
  3. Never in any of the sodomite(s) passages does God or a human author of scripture link sodomites with a committed, faithful, non-cultic partnership between two men or two women.
  4. Never in any passage that mentions Sodom does God deal with the subject of gay marriage. Isn’t that interesting?

On the other hand, whenever the Hebrew words qadesh or qadesha are used in scripture, they refer to a pagan worshiper of the fertility goddess. Therefore when we translate from Hebrew to English (or any other language), if we’re honest, we must retain the original Hebrew meaning instead of translating it to mean homosexual.

Because qadesh and qadesha, as used in the Bible, never refer to gay men or lesbian women in committed, faithful, non-cultic partnerships, it is wrong to assert that qadesh and qadesha mean homosexual in English when they clearly did not mean homosexual in Hebrew.

Sodomites, qadesh and qadesha, in the Bible were male and female worshipers of the Canaanite fertility goddess, not homosexuals and not lesbians.

Another source defines sodomite

The Companion Bible

The Companion Bible defines a whore as a sodomitess [a shrine prostitute] who was consecrated to heathen worship, 1 Kings 14:24, 15:12, 22:46, Job 36:14 (from The Companion Bible note on Deu 23:17).The Companion Bible defines sodomites [shrine prostitutes] as those who commit the sin of Sodom, male prostitutes who were dedicated to idolatry which involved male-male sexual practice(from The Companion Bible note on 1 Ki 14:24).

But I ask (blog editor) how that consciously helps establish his cause and argument?

Yes it happens to be the same stance as Tony Camp-olo, but how does a male to male act in a temple get the thumbs down, and yet some homosexual couple in downtown Manhattan, getting it on on their leather lounge become less abhorrent?

The following is from David Guzik;

2. (4-5) The wickedness and depravity of the men of Sodom.

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”

a. Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us:

These citizens of Sodom clearly came to homosexually abuse and rape these two visitors. They were willing to break all principles of hospitality and morality for their own violent and carnal gratification.

b. The men of the city…both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house:

This shows that the entire city was given over to this violence and immorality, and that this behavior wasn’t unusual, but accepted among the men of Sodom.

i. In Ezekiel 16, God later condemned and rebuked the great sin of Judah in the latter days of the divided monarchy. He compared Jerusalem to the ancient city of Sodom, saying they were like sisters.

Then, God compared the sins of Sodom to the sins of Jerusalem at that time: Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit. (Ezekiel 16:49-50)

ii. The point of the Ezekiel passage was not to say that the only sins of Sodom that made them targets of judgment were the sins of pride, idleness, injustice to the poor, and such. Instead, those were the sins of Sodom also shared by her later “sister” Jerusalem. The Genesis text makes it plain that God was also grieved by their sexual violence and immorality, which is probably included in the Ezekiel list of sins under the words committed abomination.

c. That we may know them carnally:

The sin of the men of Sodom is plainly connected to their homosexuality. There is no doubt the Bible declares homosexual conduct is sin (Romans 1:26-28).

i. The Bible condemns homosexuality in the same context as it condemns incest and bestiality (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13). If we ignore the word of God at the point of homosexual conduct, then we have no standing to say any of the other three sins are sin.

ii. Homosexual advocates have an interest in saying homosexuals are exactly like everyone else, except they love and have sex with people of their own gender. Yet when the conduct of homosexuals is observed, this is not the case.

iii. We can look at the statistics on the number of partners homosexuals have:

43% of homosexuals say they have had 500 or more sexual partners in their lifetime. Only 1% of homosexuals say they have had four or less sexual partners in their lifetime. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, 77% of homosexuals say they have met sexual partners in a city park, 62% in a homosexual bar, 61% in a theater, 31% in a public restroom. Only 28% of homosexuals said they had known their partners for at least a week before participating in homosexual sex.

iv. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons why males pursue and give in to homosexual desires is because they want to immerse themselves in a lifestyle of dangerous sex with no inhibitions or obstacles, and sense that sex with other men is an easier path to this. No wonder Paul connects “burning lust” and a debased mind with male homosexuality in Romans 1:27-28.

v. Homosexuals also have an interest in saying that up to 10% of the population is homosexual. But the most reliable statistics show only 2.3% of men in their 20’s and 30’s report ever having had a homosexual experience. Only 1.1% reported being exclusively homosexual. These low figures agree with several other surveys and those conducted in Britain and France.

vi. Homosexuals also have an interest in saying they were “born that way.” All attempts thus far to prove this have been based more on wishful thinking than solid biological research, but if it is found to be the case, so what? The Bible teaches we are all born with a predisposition to sin. It shouldn’t surprise us that some 2% of the population finds this predisposition expressed in homosexual desire.

vii. Homosexuals also have an interest in defining themselves as “gay,” a word that used to mean “happy” or “carefree,” but it is a poor description of a lifestyle that has such a high rate of death, disease, and suicide.

Our friend at gaychristian101 fails the ‘compare scripture with scripture’ test, instead finds it easier hiding behind the meaning of words.
