Emergent Watch Feb 2018
In what appears to be a one of the latest atrocities in the ecumenical war against God’s church, some Hillsong churches are partnering with Alpha – a contemplative program that originated in the heretical Anglican Holy Trinity Brompton – the church that was the European home of the ‘Holy Laughter’ heresies.
The mega-ecumenical Alpha Conference 2018 in the U.S. was just held at Hillsong Phoenix on Feb. 8-9, and featured popular Catholic artist Matt Maher, the Hillsong Phoenix worship team, Eleanor Mumford of the Vineyard Int’l Executive, Catholic Bishop Eduardo Nevares, and former Willow Creek executive Craig Springer. >

ALPHA started life back in 1977 as a modest, local church based initiative, described as ‘a means of presenting the basic principles of the Christian faith in a relaxed and informal setting’. It’s home then, as it still is today, was and is the Anglican Parish of HOLY TRINITY BROMPTON in London. Its first presenter was a man called CHARLES MARNHAM but today ‘the face’ of ALPHA is the assistant curate ‘ NICKY GUMBEL and to a lesser extent his boss, the vicar of HTB ‘ — Sandy Millar.
Dangerous influences of the Alpha Course: New Wine Theology, the Charismatic Movement and Roman Catholic ecumenism
The Alpha Course started off as a basic Bible curriculum for new believers in Christ and for and enquiring individuals. Sadly, something went wrong years ago, for the Alpha Course has systematically become a hodgepodge of unbiblical Ecumenism.
Nicky Gumbel, the man at the front of the Alpha Course, explains:
Alpha runs in every arm of the Church. It’s growing the fastest in the Catholic church.
There are a billion Catholics in the world—many in Latin America, and in France where 99% are Catholic.
But the course runs exactly the same no matter the denomination. In Alpha, we stick to the foundational pieces of the Christian faith we all agree upon: Jesus, the cross, the resurrection, the Bible, prayer.
What unites us is infinitely greater than what divides us. We focus on what unites us. We present a united front to the world. In every different part of the body of Christ—Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, non-denominational, Catholic, Pentecostals, Bulgarian Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox—Alpha crosses all divides. No matter the church, Alpha sticks to the same key ingredients: food, a presentation of the gospel, and talking. The gospel is unchanging. It’s the power of God. The key part of Alpha’s success is the work of the Holy Spirit.
We’re still not sure why Alpha works. But it does.

Nicky Gumbel’s statement here is simply impossible to accept if one understands clearly the extensive differences between Roman Catholicism and sound biblical theology. Gumbel says, “What unites us is infinitely greater than what divides us. We focus on what unites us.” Gumbel’s statement is pure unvarnished ecumenism, and a perfect example of horrific pastoral irresponsibility. The following explains why.
What unites us is infinitely greater than what divides us? Huh?
Here are some of the major Bible doctrines that Roman Catholic tradition/doctrine either convolutes or reinterprets, or mixes together to the point of creating the utter antithesis of sound biblical “Protestant” theology: Propitiation/atonement, Reconciliation, Regeneration, Justification and Sanctification.
When one examines clearly the major theological themes in the Bible (as noted below), in context and throughout Scripture, one will find that “what the Bible teaches about them on the one hand and what the Catholic tradition/doctrine teaches about them on the other, we…discover that Roman Catholicism has denied, altered, or confused all but one or two” (Emphasis in original).
Depravity, Imputation, Grace, Propitiation, Atonement, Reconciliation, Calling (efficacious), Regeneration, Union with Christ, Conversion, Repentance, Faith, Justification, Adoption, Sanctification, Eternal security, Perseverance, Election/predestination, Redemption, Death, resurrection, and the final state, The church.

In summary, Gumbel saying “What unites us is infinitely greater than what divides us” and “We focus on what unites us” is the ultimate in promoting two completely separate gospel messages. One wonders, has Nicky Gumbel forget the history of the Roman Catholic church, the Jesuit led Inquisition, the papal worship, the pagan doctrines, the psuedo-Christian trimmings, and the millions of persecuted Christian martyrs that Rome has decimated? It sure seems like he has, if he is sending people straight back into Roman Catholic churches.
On December 15, 2012, The Spectator published the following statements from an interview between Damian Thompson and Nicky Gumbel:
Photos of the event show Catholic clergy in full regalia holding up the Eucharist wafer and doing mass on the stage at Hillsong Phoenix.

Here are the highlights
Strange thing is, Hillsong Phoenix’s Facebook pages show no trace of the Alpha Conference.
But, Hillsong LA’s social media page show the church is beginning the full Alpha course in the church starting Jan. 31st 2018.
Apparently, unbeknownst to most, Hillsong has had an “Alpha Track” at many of their conferences since at least 2011.
How long Hillsong can maintain the facade of orthodoxy is anyone’s guess, but they are aided by endorsements like Greg Laurie’s and Brian Brodersen’s, who on KWVE radio @12/3/2015 said:
“I’m a big Hillsong fan… These guys are tremendous when it comes to worship. I might not agree with every fine point of theology, with the Hillsong movement, but that’s OK. We don’t have to agree with everybody on all the finer points of theology. They’re Christians, [NOTE] THEY’RE *ORTHODOX, they believe in the Gospel… I recently read Brian Houston’s book ‘Live, Love, Lead‘ – it’s a great book, inspiring – So, personally, I appreciate the contribution that Hillsong is making to the advancement of the Kingdom in this generation – I think it’s a good thing.”
Anyone familiar with Alpha’s links to contemplative mysticism knows this certainly is not a good thing. As a quick perusal of the Hillsong TV Channel will show – Hillsong is far from being orthodox, and is firmly in the ‘Word-Faith’ / ‘Kingdom Now’ camp.
That they have now joined with Alpha takes their apostasy to a whole new level.
